HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION
The El Paso Suturians is a relatively new organization in comparison with other philanthropic and service organizations, but during its short history, has already accomplished many outstanding achievements improving the quality of life in the city of El Paso. During 1976, a group of young businessmen comprised of Jim Maxon, Martin Mordecai, Lynn Gore, Bob Boettger, Bill Schwartz, Rusty Jeannette, David Ray, Bill Barnhouse, Henry Rettig, Les Parker and George Wayne met to discuss the possibility of forming a new organization which would generate enthusiasm for new and exciting actvities in the community and, along the way, generate funds which could be contributed to charitable and other worthy causes. The gourp patterned the new organization after the Thunderbirds in Phoenix, Arizona. Bill Barnhouse, Jim Maxon, Bill Schwartz, Rusty Jeannette, Lynn Gore and Les Parker prepared the Bylaws of the organization. The original age limit was for businessmen between the ages of 30 and 40 years. The Sunturians, was, and still is, an organization that encourages the involvement of young businessmen in activities for the improvement of the quality of life in El Paso, Texas.
The organization had a party at the Plantation Restaurant to invite prospective members to the join and received an overwhilming response. Within a very short period of time, the organization was preparing to sponsor activities in El Paso. It was orginally thought that the Sunturians would sponsor a major golf tournament or sporting event as a money-making activity. As time progressed however, the organization began sponsoring artistic performances of the Houston Ballet and Broadway road shows and enjoyed a tremendous success in its programs.
The Sunturians has been the only organization with goals encompassing areas other than the arts to receive an award from the Governor of the State of Texas for artistic achievement. That award was received in 1981. Sunturans has also been selected in the past years by Mayor Jonathan Rogers to formulate, organize and implement the City's anti-crime campaign which is a program designed to be permanent in operation. |
