El Paso Sunturians announce recipients of the PasoPort Program scholarships

06.13.07— On June 13, 2007, the El Paso Sunturians announced the recipients of their PasoPort Program scholarships at the organization’s annual luncheon ceremony. The PasoPort Program is a scholarship assistance program for academically gifted students who lack the financial resources to travel to their respective college for four years. One of the program’s major objectives is to help alleviate the “brain drain” epidemic in the El Paso area by making it easy for students to maintain strong ties to their families and them community. The El Paso Sunturians are proud to present this year’s recipients:

Xavier Cadena, Jose Raul Castrellon, Fabiola Mateos, Daniel Montelongo, Michael Montelongo, Rodolfo Rodriquez, Jorge E. Garcia, Jose David Retana, Marysol Cazares, Brenda Veloz, Luis Alonso Dominguez, and Liza Lopez.

These talented youths join 30 PasoPort graduates and 37 current students in representing an outlay of over $200,000 throughout the life of the program.

The PasoPort Program is a project of the Sunturians, a group of 100 young business leaders in El Paso, to provide assistance to selected students in the El Paso, Socorro and Ysleta Independent School Districts who have received scholarships to institutions of higher education outside of the Paso del Norte region. Full scholarship recipients will receive a minimum of two round-trip airline tickets per year for four academic years. Partial scholarship recipients will receive a one-time, lump-sum cash scholarship of between $250 and $1,000.
